Is Sting Operation Justified?

By Ramya Ganesh
In the law enforcement, sting
operation is an operation
designed to catch a person
committing crime. The sting
operation gathers evidence of
the suspect's wrong doing.
Sting operation in the
film industry is been said as a
sheer entrapment and many
have called for boycotting the
sting operation in the TV.
channels and there has also
been widespread protest by
the people who feels it a "total
invasion of privacy" but from
the other side of the coin the
public needs sting operation to
be done in many other things
like for example 'blood being
sold outside hospital'.
The line has been
drawn by the media in sensationalizing
the issues and the
media is carrying this sting operation
to interest the public.
We see in the daily newspaper
about the news, which we
always fascinate to know and
even publicize the people but
no one is taking the initiative
to protest it.
Its not only about
Shakti Kapoor and Aman
Verma, its about the entire nation
and there are much better
ways to remove crime and
moreover nobody knows
what happened behind the
camera. Sting operation according
to me is interrupting
the private life and it's not the
work of the public to interfere
in the privacy of the people.
After the Gujarat riots,
the Jessica Lal murder
case has thrown a challenge
for the country’s criminal justice
system, but what Tehelka
did in the recent past was very
important and sting operation
in such cases should be done.
Not only in Jessica Lal case
but in Cash-for-Query also
sting operation was important
which was held on 12 th December
called as a black day.
The sting operation titled "Operation
Duryodhan" which was
carried out by AajTak in association
with Cobrapost
caught the MP's through the
camera for taking money for
raising questions in the Parliament.
The background of the
operation was scored by a fictitious
organization called
North India Small Manufactures
Association
(NISMA) with
Anirudhha Bahal
and Suhasini Raj
of Cobrapost. A
strong and an exemplary
action
against the member
involved was
demanded by
the MPs of the
Lok Sabha,
those accused MPs are trying
to defend themselves by qualifying
it as a "Bhool" while the
journalist where determind to
defame themselves.
It was probably the
worst day for any citizen of India
watching their representatives
accepting a bulk of
notes. Parliament is the icon of
any Democracy, but there are
few greedy politicians awaiting
to pollute this holy institution
for their own sake, hampering
the basics of the theme
"For the people, Of ….". Regrettably,
the fourth pillar of
democracy, i.e. Media is
showcasing the crash of another
most important pillar, i.e.
Legislature.
Sting operation is a
witty formula to know the
originality of the famous personalities.
In my opinion, Sting
Operation in the media house
is increasing day by day. No
doubt it has lot of technicalities
like hidden camera and
voice recorders in doing a
Sting Operation but the journalists
are forgetting that it is
related to the life of the
people. According to me there
are lots of pro and cons to it.
The demerits in it are that it is
taunting in the life of the
people, which is again been
shown to the nation at large,
which is an insult for the culprit.
No journalist has the right
to just enter into somebody's
room to investigate on them
and show the public and hear
the question of ethics come
into, but yes if sting operations
are done for any good cause
then I am totally for it.

In Jessica Lal case or
Cash for Query case the sting
operation is totally acceptable
because it is helping the culprit
to get justices but inspite
a lots of research in Jessica
Lal cases the journalist were
not successful in showing the
culprits and case is again reopened.
The news magazine
Tehelka had carried out a
three month sting operation
against three key witnesses-
Shayan Munshi, Karan
Rajput and Shiv Das who had
turned hostile in the case. The
operation had sought to reveal
how money and muscle power
was allegedly used to coerce
the three witnesses into changing
their stand in the
court.
I would like
to end by saying that
sting operation
should be done by
the journalists at their
own risk and should
be done for the right
cause. At the end of
the operation, the victim
should be given justice. The
case of Jessica and Mattoo is
a beacon to emulate.
